It is my belief that you need to develop and maintain a positive mental attitude in order to reach your full potential in sales. With a great attitude, anything is possible for you in your career. Like Zig Ziglar always said, “Your Attitude, not your Aptitude, will determine your Ultimate Altitude!” But how do you develop and maintain a positive attitude, especially if you’re in sales? Well over the past 16 years working in sales and management, I have had to learn techniques and skills to succeed mentally. We all go through tests in our life, and I try to remember what Pastor Rick Warren preaches,

“Before success comes a test”

It is true that one of the greatest traits of all the best salespeople to ever sell is a positive attitude.  I experienced it first hand on my own, and that is why I believe these positive mental attitude tips can help you tremendously. So, as a new salesperson, you can understand why attitude is so important as you get started in your career. It is critical to start your career off right and set a solid foundation for yourself. Learning to have a great, positive attitude about things makes for a happier, more successful career. With a bad attitude, your sales are doomed for sure. Regardless of the product or service you sell, you have to remember that you are in the people business first and foremost and bad attitudes attract negative situations and outcomes. Don’t fall into the rut! Your attitude affects the customer experience, and believe me people want to deal with someone who they believe has it handled and is a professional. Customers want to feel appreciated, and salespeople with great attitudes tend to offer a higher level of customer service.

In Sales, Your Attitude Affects Your Commission Check

Your attitude will absolutely have an effect on your commission check. The bigger and greater your attitude, most likely the bigger and greater your commission check will be. Salespeople with positive mental attitudes tend to experience financial abundance instead of the worry most commissioned salespeople have. Customers will pay more to do business with a salesperson that has a great attitude! Here are My 7 Easy Positive Mental Attitude Tips To Help You Succeed In Sales, in no particular order… Enjoy!

TIP #1] Make A Gratitude List

Every now and then I will sit down and make a Gratitude List to remind me of all the things I already have to be grateful for in my life. I sit down with a pen and pad, some time to think without getting distracted, and I write down all the things I’m grateful for in my life. I try to think of as many things as I can and create a list. I then use my gratitude list to remind myself as often as I need of all the positive and good things in my life as I work towards the next big goal/s. If you implement this into your routine, be sure to update it from time to time as necessary to keep it motivating. “Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” -William Arthur Ward

TIP #2] Use Positive Language

I am very, very careful of the kind of language I use during the day. I really work hard to make positive language a part of who I am, I try to see the positive in all things. I believe that people who use positive language are more successful. Is it a shock to you when that person who is always negative about everything ends up in another negative situation in their life? Um… NO! The words I choose to use paint a clear picture of the thoughts dominating my mind. We are surrounded by negativity everywhere we turn, so we need to take full responsibility for our language and how we talk to ourselves especially.  Choose your words wisely because they truly do have a tremendous impact on the quality of your life!

TIP #3] Feed Your Mind Positive Content

I read positive books that inspire me and teach me things. The average American reads less than one book a year! However, your most successful salespeople, CEO’s, and entrepreneurs read 60 books or more a year. Everyone has the same amount of hours in a day, it’s whether you make it a priority I have found. I listen to positive speakers like Pastor Rick Warren, Tony Robbins, Grant Cardone or Zig Ziglar. I watch videos on YouTube. I’ve been to seminars and conferences. I am a constant student looking to learn and grow in my profession and in life! What goes into your mind manifest into reality. You create in your life what you put your focus on, so I suggest that you make your environment as positive as possible and focus on great things!

TIP #4] Have A Morning Routine

This works great for me to help me maintain a positive mental attitude over long periods of time. So for me, it all starts with a solid morning routine to set up success for my day. When I have a plan and know what I want to accomplish it makes prioritizing and getting the most from my day that much easier. I’m not a morning person so for me a morning routine is a solid way to set myself up for success.

TIP #5] Maintain Good Physical Health

Let’s face it, when you are in good physical health you feel better, you have more confidence, and you’ll likely have a more positive mental attitude because of it. I know that’s how it is for me! I strive to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. I feel better, look better, and the boost in self-confidence helps increase my sales performance which has a big effect on my attitude. Exercise is also a great way to relieve stress, it releases hormones that make you happier, and you gain energy! So, I highly recommend you find time in your day to exercise.

TIP #6] Get Your Inner Circle On Board

The people in my life are on the same page as me, almost all the time. I believe there is no sense to commit yourself to a positive mental attitude, and then go and surround yourself with negative people. It doesn’t work for me, and studies show it doesn’t work for anyone really. As Zig use to say, “You become part of what you’re around.” This has been a hard one for me over the years because sometimes the people that contribute the most negativity in our lives are the ones we love the most and want to spend more time with. But I am committed to surrounding myself with good, and positive people and situations. I suggest that you make sure the people around you the most understand you no longer participate in negative thinking, and you don’t want negativity in your life!

TIP #7] Be A Giver

There is something amazing for me about giving others your time, your attention, or your resources to help them. This is especially true if the person you are giving to cannot repay you in any way. I cannot help but feel positive and good when I’m genuinely helping someone else. I try to make this a regular part of my life. I look for ways to give back and do the world some good. Of all these positive mental attitude tips this one will make you feel the best and always seems to work. Giving of yourself is a sure way to be successful with people, have a positive attitude, live a fulfilled life!

Wrapping it all up!

Is a positive mental attitude important? I say Absolutely it is, and I hope you agree with me! I understand more than anyone the importance of maintaining a positive mental attitude being a professional car salesman. Sometimes I just need a good check up from the neck up, know what I mean? I have also seen other salespeople’s career’s and life’s changed simply by changing their attitude. I am one of those people myself! It’s amazing how life gets better when you start thinking positive and seeing the good in things.

I have to agree that attitude does determine the zeros you find in your paycheck.

Although I am kind of a reserved person, I tried the huge attitude thing and almost doubled my sales that day.

I tried again with another attitude and barely got any sales.

Since then I have been trying to get myself easy and fun around people to get them smiling while they pull out their wallets and checks to make a purchase.

    Scott · August 26, 2017 at 10:05 pm

Dave, the best advice I could give you is just be yourself… and have, make sales, and make money!

ChazzBrown · April 9, 2017 at 4:28 pm

Your recommendations were completely unexpected to me. And I mean that in a good way.

I expected some ruthless always-be-closing type macho pep talk and the first thing you hit me with was ‘make a gratitude list!”

Positive self-talk is probably the most beneficial tool to have in any career you choose.

I like your page a lot. I think too often people are looking for a quick and easy way to make money and I think that they forget there there is a lot that goes in to being successful in anything including sales. I like that you discussed the positive attitude that we all know makes so much difference. It is not only in sales but in everything. I don’t even like to order my food from a fast food restaurant when the person at the window has a poor attitude and does not want to be there.I think this also applies to anyone, anywhere, in anything that they do. It is why we tip, give references, and even share reviews and experiences with others. It is because positive (or negative) attitude matters very much to people and they are not interested in doing business with people who are negative. The other point that you made that I thought was awesome was that you pointed out the very crucial difference between confidence and conceitedness. I think that people can tend to forget that it is okay to feel good about yourself and find confidence within, but it is not okay to put other people down to find it. I think that positive mental attitude is something we all could stand to stay focused on and this was a very good post detailing some ways that we can do this. Have you done all of these things in your daily life? If so, what kind of things have you seen change as a result that may not have happened with a negative attitude?

    Scott · March 24, 2017 at 10:20 am

Great feedback, Tatiana! I learned years ago now that attitude makes all the difference. I use to have a bad attitude, more arrogant actually. I learned that a negative, cocky attitude leads to a very disappointing life. Once I figured that out my life changed. I found the great Zig Ziglar on a sales seminar CD and at the time I was listening to it I thought for sure he was speaking just to me. I never looked back and it has turned into a wonderful marriage to my favorite person in the whole world, two healthy sons, a great sales career, a six figure income, a growing business, the closest relationship with God I have ever had, and so much more.

I’m glad you liked the site, please Share! : )

wow, I like the idea of gratitude list
“Use your Gratitude List to remind yourself as often as needed of all the positive and good things in your life”

this sounds like the idea to count our blessings, when we do it this way, we may be surprised by things that we never realized, things that we may take for granted.

Thanks for your advice and tips.

    Scott · March 24, 2017 at 10:14 am

You are very welcome… It is amazing the things we take for granted. The Gratitude List might sound hokey to some, but I promise anyone who does it will benefit from it!

Ziad · March 23, 2017 at 4:32 pm

I think you make a good point. Many people under estimate the power of a good attitude. But it literally makes everything easier. I think #1,4, and 7 really resonate with me. I think they are game changers and if made into habits they really go a long way in shifting the mindset and being consistent with it. Great Post.

    Scott · March 23, 2017 at 6:01 pm

Thank you very much, Ziad! I’m glad you were able to relate to this. Do you have any tips yourself that could help to maintain a positive attitude?

Amber · March 23, 2017 at 12:45 pm

Scott, I agree with you as I too, have a sales background. Coming from a place of love/gratitude/giving, makes the world of difference in sales. I write in my gratitude journal every morning which puts me in a place to come from love… also, have you ever read the book “Go-Giver”, the book goes hand in hand with #7. Great points throughout this post, thank you for great insight.

    Scott · March 23, 2017 at 6:00 pm

Amber, thank you! I have not read that book but I promise I’ll be checking into it! Have you read The 10X Rule? If not, I highly recommend that as well. Great book that that changed my way of thinking!

Denis · March 23, 2017 at 12:23 pm

Hi Scott,

I really like your post! It is all about being positive and it all starts with gratitude as your first tip, so I say that we are on the same path. 🙂 I am a true believer that we are what we think and that if think in a positive way, we will have positive results. I have seen this in my life numerous times now. By having a positive outlook on everything, the rest comes easy. Happiness cannot be bought or owned, it is the inner self that dictates our true selves. I really like what you are saying here and it’s very inspiring. Thank you!

    Scott · March 23, 2017 at 5:58 pm

Thanks for your comment, Denis! I’m glad you found these 7 easy positive mental attitude tips helpful and inspiring. You seem like a very positive person, do you have any additional tips of your own you’d like to share?

Rob S. · March 23, 2017 at 12:08 pm

It’s not just sales but everything in life is about your attitude. Once you change your attitude and start thinking and feeling positive, everything good will be attracted to you. I believe in “The Secret” and that you should focus on positive things and have gratitude for everything day in and day out. Change now and you’ll see your stress levels change too. People will notice the difference. How many people know how to accomplish this? Are you willing? Think about it and then take ACTION!

    Scott · March 23, 2017 at 5:56 pm

Attitude of Gratitude makes for a great life! Thanks, Rob!

Asen · March 23, 2017 at 11:28 am

Hello there,

That is a super handy article and a must-read for every salesperson.
I totally relate to all the tips you mention.
In the end, I believe that it all starts with the positive attitude and the ability to overcome the obstacles.
In that manner of speaking, I like John Kehoe’s books. They are truly wonderful.

    Scott · March 23, 2017 at 5:43 pm

Thanks, Asen! Positive attitude makes all the difference. I’ve never heard of John Kehoe, I’ll have to check him out. If you haven’t read it before, a book that changed my attitude and my life was The 10X Rule.

Lauren · March 11, 2017 at 11:14 pm

Your post reminds me of the Marcus Aurelius quote, “Very little is needed to make a happy life. It is all within yourself, within your way of thinking.”

I especially appreciated what you said about feeding yourself positive content. I find that even by going for a walk and photographing the flowers gives me free “positive content” and a little pick me up. Sometimes the simplest things are better to fill your mind with than material that is negative or has no substance.

Cheers!
Lauren

    Scott · March 12, 2017 at 11:18 am

Absolutely Lauren! What a great example of positive content.. it doesn’t always have to be a book, video or audio! Thank you! : )

shrey · March 9, 2017 at 1:46 pm

I have seen a lot of improvements in my work by just incorporating positive attitude. I think ti is really important to have a positive mindset to achieve any goal in life and you have rightly mentioned its importance here. Positive attitude tends to attract positive thoughts. Having a positive mindset and working hard towards your goals is my secret to success. Thank you for the informative post.

    Scott · March 12, 2017 at 11:25 am

    Thanks, Shrey!

It’s funny how we refer to our ways to success as a secret, but in reality if you study any successful person there is no secret to how you achieve success in life. Attitude is one of those things that is a requirement if you want to have the best life has to offer you!

Jeremy Hood · March 8, 2017 at 5:48 pm

Postivity is really under estimated.

Sometimes when I am stressed or frustrated I realize I have been allowing other people’s negative energy to affect me.

These are some great tips, I really need to work on being a giver. Giving back always feels great, I need to make more time to do it.

    Scott · March 12, 2017 at 11:28 am

Jeremy that is one of the hardest things to overcome in your life, staying positive around negative people. If you are surrounded by negative people, it’s impossible for some of that not to rub off on you. This is why choosing your circle of influence and being mindful of who you spend time with is so important.

I find that people who give back regularly are often positive people. Surrounding yourself with givers is a great way to accomplish two goals!

Ian · February 25, 2017 at 8:21 pm

I think attitude makes all the difference between a positive and a negative outcome in our lives. Keeping a gratitude list is a great idea and is one that I might integrate into my own routine going forward. Taking good physical care of oneself is also essential for overall well-being.
Thanks for the encouraging post and keep up the good work!

    Scott · March 12, 2017 at 11:29 am

    Thank you, Ian!

Have you made a Gratitude List? If so, I am curious if this has had any positive affects on your attitude recently?

Anthony Little · February 19, 2017 at 11:22 am

I agree having a good attitude reflect the outcome of your success. Whether you are salesperson or business owners you attitude matters. People would respect you if your attitude is right.

Your article was very interesting and I think everyone should read this article and let the words in your article sink in their mind.

Attitude is key, Attitude is your paycheck, and Attitude determines your success. Thanks for a wonderful article.

    Scott · February 19, 2017 at 2:41 pm

Thank you for the feedback, Anthony! I’m glad you enjoyed it and I agree with you 100%! Be sure to Share with friends! Be Great!

Blame · January 6, 2017 at 8:51 pm

I think that gratitude plays a big role when it comes to thinking positively. People in general fall into the mistake of thinking negatively because they constantly think about the minor obstacles that gets in their way of reaching their goals. However, nobody thinks about all the accomplishments and help they got to become who they are today. People should be thankful and realize that they are already extremely lucky to have what they have. When people can accomplish that, then they can accomplish anything in life.

    Scott · January 6, 2017 at 9:59 pm

Thank you for your thoughts. I agree, when we have an attitude of gratitude we can accomplish great things with our life. I wish you great success!
