I know you have heard it before somewhere along the way but it really is true, and whoever gave you the advice was right in doing so. Truly, one of the best things you do for yourself is to learn how to properly set goals for your career, and your life. The odds are you are not setting goals at all right now. If you are someone who sets goals then I congratulate you for doing something that most people ignore altogether. However even if you are setting goals it’s likely that you do so irregularly, like on New Year’s Eve or a couple times a year.
Study after study shows that about 90% of people who set goals, don’t see them through to achievement. Why is that? Why do so many people fail at setting and achieving their goals? What is happening to people (and you may be one of them I know I have been in the past), that set a target consistently and fail to hit it?Because I have been this person before, I have some thoughts about it. Here’s what I think.
- They Didn’t Set Goals To Their Potential
- They Didn’t Know How To Set Goals Properly
- They Have Limited Thinking
- They Didn’t Take Enough Action
Or, it could be all of these reasons. Usually, for most people struggling to reach their goals, that’s not the case. I know for me personally, my problem with reaching my goals was simply setting my targets in every area of my life WAY TOO LOW! Especially in my sales career. I had allowed myself to become handicapped badly by very small, and limited thinking. I was setting goals that were a reflection of my reality, not my potential. To me, It was never worth the effort of achieving average goals. Once my eyes were opened, I started setting BIG Targets!
Eventually while reading one day, the light bulb went off for me. My problem wasn’t that I couldn’t achieve my goals. My problem was that I was achieving my goals, and my goals were too small. I was living in my reality, not my potential. I was having success, at very average standards. Because of this, I would often lose interest in my goals getting sidetracked easily, having to regain momentum over and over again. Thus, getting stuck at certain levels of my life far too long.
I Began Setting Goals Based On My Potential
So, the first thing I did was I started thinking about my potential. I asked myself some questions. I thought about what I truly believed I could accomplish with my life if I really went all in. I asked myself, what am I capable of if I give everything I have each day? I decided after taking some personal inventory, that I believe I can accomplish anything I want. I really believe that if I have a passion for it, I will do whatever it takes to be successful. So, the first of the easy steps I am giving you here is this: You must give some real thought to your potential. Take some time and really think about what you could achieve with your life if you totally committed yourself to the things you want and care about the most. What kind of future do you want? But more importantly, do you believe you can achieve it? This is your opportunity to get real with yourself. This is a chance to take an inventory of your skills, abilities, unique qualities, and what you bring to the table and get sold on yourself!
Ask Yourself, What Success Have I Had In My Life?
I started thinking back over my successes in my career, and my life up to that point. I began reminding myself of the times I had accomplished things that required hard work, commitment, discipline, and how I was able to stick with it to the end. I thought about personal and professional accomplishments. My accomplishments motivated me to think positive, and believe I could do anything I put my mind to! This helped to give me a bigger and more confident opinion of my potential and what I can personally accomplish. You must become aware of what you truly believe you can achieve. Recognize how you think about yourself, and if it’s not positive you need to work towards changing that before you can expect to accomplish great things. If you’re not sold on yourself, it will be very hard to stick to, and achieve big goals.
So I Became Sold On Myself, Then What?
Then, I sat down and set my goals on paper. This is one of those easy steps you can take all by itself and I think it will have an impact on your ability to achieve the goals you set. You need to sit down and put your goals to paper. But not just once a month, quarter, or few times a year. I woke up every morning and the first thing I did was write down my goals. I also wrote my goals down in the evening, usually before going to bed. I picked up this idea in The 10X Rule, and it really works! It’s recommended in the book to write out your goals as if you have already achieved them. So that’s what I do. Let’s say you have a goal of selling $2 Million dollars of furniture this year. You would write out your goal like this, “I have written $2,000,000 in furniture sales this year.”
Writing out my goals this way, as if I had already accomplished them really made an impact almost immediately on my attitude. Having goals aligned with my potential, and writing them out daily and in this fashion, really kept me motivated. Thinking about how I would feel once the goal was realized really kept me in the game. Remember that no matter how successful you become, if you will always push yourself to higher levels things will get tougher at every level. You will need to persist. You will need to stay motivated. That cannot happen if you are not committed every day to your goal/s. You need big goals that are pushing you towards your potential so you can stay interested and hungry!
One helpful action you can take throughout the day is to grab a journal or just simply a legal pad and write out why you want to accomplish your goal/s. This will remind you of the big goals in your life and what you want your life to look like. This will serve as a refresher when things get hard or challenging. It helps to motivate you remembering why you’re working so hard! If you’re not totally committed to your goals, as soon as something doesn’t go your way, or you have a bad day you will be in jeopardy of losing your drive and momentum. Without total belief in yourself and your ability to do great things, you are susceptible to outside influences or “bad luck.”
Begin To Change And Remove Small, Limited Thinking
So, next on my easy steps to goal setting list is to remove limited thinking. You need to realize that there is an abundance of success available on planet Earth. There is no shortage of money, resources, or opportunities. The only thing you can’t get more of is time. So remove limited thoughts from your mind, life is too short for them to keep you down and stuck in place. Realize that if you want to be rich, or own your own company, or help millions of people that you can absolutely do that! Oh and here’s the great news. So can everyone else because there is enough success and opportunity to go around. So no matter how much success someone else has, you can still have your own.
STOP listening to people who tell you-you can’t accomplish something that you believe in, or you’re excited about. Don’t let family and friends tell you that you shouldn’t set your goals so high because you may be disappointed if you fail. They may be trying to “protect you” but it’s damaging and harmful to your success in life. Most likely they themselves are affected by limited thinking and this is a projection onto you of how they view the world. Some people will even look to bring you down to their level of thinking by telling you all the reasons you can’t do something. This helps them justify their decision to play it safe in their own life. They probably quit on themselves and want you to do the same. Don’t fall victim to it! Don’t become a part of that club. Remember these easy steps I am giving you and use them to quite the naysayers with your amazing results.
Learn How To Take Massive Action
Now, you are hopefully sold on yourself and have set some big goals that push you towards your potential. You have begun to remove limited thinking and see there is an abundance of success available to you in this world. Right? Next, you have to take action. Of all the easy steps we are covering here to setting and achieving your goals, this one gets taken for granted often. People usually tend to underestimate how much action it will take to accomplish their goals. When you are setting your goals, you need to determine how much action you believe it will take to achieve them. If you don’t put enough action behind the things you want to achieve, you will fall short. If you fail to plan, as they say, you plan to fail. Most people take normal levels of action, or none at all. I learned not just to take action, but to take MASSIVE ACTION!
So, each day I committed to massive amounts of action. I made more calls, sent more emails and letters, I talked to more people, did more social media. I took massive action daily. I knew that taking 2 or 3 actions wouldn’t get me the results I wanted. I took MASSIVE action each day all focused on hitting my targets. Don’t get me wrong, taking massive action is not easy to do day in and day out. But it’s worth it and it becomes easier the more you follow these easy steps I am laying out here for you. Failing and Succeeding both take effort. I have done enough of them both in the last 20 years to know that’s true. But, I have also learned that if you are going to put in the effort of doing something, then try like heck to succeed at what you’re doing!
It’s not going to happen for you all the time. Actually, it is very likely you will fail more often than not, most of us do. It’s just the way it is. But, you’ll get more out of your life, and your successes will be greater if you take massive levels of action opposed to average levels of action! Plus, you never truly fail unless you quit and with the right goals in place and actions behind them, you won’t quit on yourself. When you start to apply these basic and easy steps to your goal setting routine, I hope a switch will go off inside you. That’s what happened to me. Doors in my mind were unlocked to what I believed I could accomplish once I started applying these easy steps. I began to see my potential in life, that I could absolutely accomplish and contribute more than I was. I could see the only limit to my success was myself and the limits that I created. Once I removed the barriers in my mind that limited me, once I started believing more was possible for me, I accomplished more.
Wrapping it all up!
Achieving any worthy goal is going to take hard work. However, by applying these easy steps you will give yourself an advantage over others that simply hope for things to happen instead of going out and making them happen. You are going to finally be giving yourself the opportunity to succeed and stick with the goals you set, and the things you want to accomplish in your life. So many people quit way too soon on things. Many times people quit right before they are about to have a breakthrough. I know this happened to me. I would quit on myself way too soon because I hadn’t set big enough goals to stay interested.
You have to set your goals big enough to keep yourself interested, and motivated. Trust me on this, you can have an average life without setting goals for it. Only you know your potential and what you can truly achieve. Don’t sell yourself short on this! Go BIG! Leave it all out there in life. If you follow these easy steps, you will be getting bigger, more exciting, more personal goals for yourself that are aligned with your potential. Goals that make sense for who you are and who you want to become in the future. Remember, you must be “all-in.” You can’t be halfway in if you want to do great things. Some questions to ask yourself are; What’s my potential? What do I want to achieve most? Do I believe there is an abundance of success available in the world? Am I willing to take the massive action necessary? I believe you are. I believe if you follow these easy steps that I have laid out here for you, you will have much greater success than ever before setting and achieving your goals.
Don’t let your biggest regret be lying on your deathbed someday knowing you didn’t leave it all out there in your life. Don’t end up as the person who lived with small thinking all their life and never scratched the surface of his/her potential. Don’t let all those great dreams, ideas, inspirations you have died with you. Bring it all to life while you have time.
